St. Lucia Day
Today is St. Lucia Day. It is a holiday Jon's family always celebrates and a tradition we have continued with our family. St. Lucia Day is celebrated in many Scandanavian countries that marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Jon's dad served his mission in Norway and Jon's grandpa served in Sweden, so it has become a favorite in the Amundson household. Traditionally, the oldest daughter wears a white dress with a wreath of candles on her head. She wakes her family at dawn bringing saffron buns and singing the St. Lucia song. 
Lucia means light, and she symbolizes bringing new life in winter. As you can see, I don't get up early to bring my family breakfast in bed, but we celebrate in similar ways. In Jon's family, they get an ornament each year. 
Here's a picture of Natalie with her ornament. I think she liked the box more than the ornament itself. I didn't make saffron buns either this year. Instead, I made scrambled eggs and sausage. It's a much quicker breakfast before Jon goes to work. It is a fun tradition for our family and one I always look forward to celebrating each year.

HEY! We have that same advent tree! Chris' parents got it for us last year when they were in Germany. What are the chances?!?
Loved your Santa Lucia Day. It's nice to know you are continuing the tradition. Don't know much about blogs, so hope you get this comment. We're here in Finland helping out the new temple presidency with Russian week. Gpa sent you an e-mail about meeting friends of yours, Sarah. Aubree Frost Legler and Scott have been tremendous helpers for us. He speaks good Russian so has done some interpreting...knows your sister Catherine [sp?]. She knows Julia quite well. They are a great couple. No snow yet in Finland or Sweden and the locals in both places are panicked that they won't have a white Christmas. Being Californians at heart, we don't really care...we LOVE the unusually warm weather we are enjoying so far. MERRY CHRISTMAS. Love, Gma
Glad to see you are continuing the tradition-we did it-sort of-this year, but Haley grabbed her cinnamon roll on the way out the door, and Dad was out of town. We sent Clark a St. Lucia package, but I don't know if he made the stuff, or told his companion about our tradition. Hopefully, it will be more appreciated next year.
